Sustainability
We are committed to improving our sustainability farming practices and reducing our environmental impact.
About Sustainability
We are dedicated to protecting and nurturing the land that enables us to grow our quality salad leaves and herbs.
At Blackdown Growers, we understand that our business is dependent on the health of the environment. That’s why we are dedicated to protecting and nurturing the land that enables us to grow our quality salad leaves and herbs. By caring for the environment, we not only ensure the freshest produce but also contribute to a more sustainable planet for future generations.
We are always working to enhance our sustainability practices, continuously exploring new ways to reduce our environmental impact.
Landscape and Nature Conservation
For each glasshouse we construct, we carefully evaluate the surrounding environment and create natural habitats around them. Across our farms, we have also dedicated wildlife sanctuaries featuring thoughtfully designed habitats for grass snakes, barn owls, insects and birds.
Water Management
We have our own water lagoons as catchment zones for rainwater that come off the glasshouse roofs, which makes a great habitat for local wildlife. We also employ advanced water management systems that optimise water usage, further reducing our ecological footprint.
Crop Health and Protection
We apply wheat, barley and rye grass cover crops in the winter to put nutrients back into the soil. We preform crop rotation to ensure we are not exhausting the soil.
Recyclable Packaging
All our Leampak salad leaves and herbs are packaged in recyclable material and distributed using reusable crates. We are regularly making improvements to our packaging to make it a sustainable alternative.
LEAF Accredited
We are LEAF Marque (Linking the environment and Farming) accredited, which is a leading global assurance system recognising more sustainably farmed products. This accreditation demonstrates our whole farm business approach to deliver more sustainable farming.
